Match Preview:-
When: 5th January, 1:00pm IST
Where: Newlands, Cape Town
Team News:-
- Ravindra Jadeja is out with viral fever and will mostly not be part of the 1st Test.
- Shikhar Dhawan has been cleared to play the 1st Test after an ankle injury. India would want him to play the 1st Test, but it depends on how he feels on match day.
- Dale Steyn hasn’t played competitive cricket for a while. If he isn’t 100%, he may be replaced by the in-form Andre Phehlukwayo.
History:
India has a lot to prove in this series, as they have never won a series in South Africa. The last time India toured South Africa, SA won 1-0 in the two-match series.
The last match between India and South Africa at Newlands was in 2011, which ended in the draw.
India has only 2 players – Che Pujara and Ishant Sharma – retained from the 2011 squad, while SA has 4 – Hashim Amla, AB de Villiers, Dale Steyn and Morne Morkel.
While the Indian squad is one of the strongest assembled in a long time, SA will be the favorites due to history and home conditions.

Watch Out Player
Quinton de Kock:
Quinton de Kock has one of the best records against India in limited overs, and will be looking to continue his form in the longest format as well. He hasn’t been in the greatest form of late, and will be hoping that his favourite opposition helps him rediscover his golden touch.
Kagiso Rabada:
While everyone has been waiting for the return of Dale Steyn, they seem to have forgotten about SA’s best pacer. Young Rabada has been in incredible form in Tests. 105 wickets at an average of 22.29 is testament to his ability. Raw pace, controlled aggression and the ability to swing the ball will make Rabada India’s biggest threat this series.
Ajinkya Rahane:
The much-maligned Rahane will be looking to bounce back and reclaim his spot as one of India’s best Test batsmen in this series. Rahane is known for his ability against pace and swing, and his propensity to perform when the chips are down. This series is the perfect opportunity for him to regain his form.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar:
Bhuvneshwar Kumar has been touted to be India’s strike bowler this series. With more variations, increased strength and pace and several quality performances over the last year, Bhuvi is expected to make full use of the conditions in South Africa and stake his claim as one of the best swing bowlers in modern cricket.
Surprise pick:
Keshav Maharaj:
As the pitch at Newlands is expected to be slower than usual, the underrated Keshav Maharaj could be the x-factor for South Africa. His ability to turn the ball will cause serious problems for the Indian batsmen. Moreover, he is more than a decent batsman and could score vital runs for his team.
